Venice Hotels: What are we looking for and where?

Venice is an island city known for its famous canals. The largest of these, the Grand Canal, follows a serpentine path from the top of the island to the bottom and is the main artery of transportation since there are no cars, trucks or mopeds here. Water buses (Vaporettos) ply the Grand Canal like a water metro system. The main train station (Santa Lucia) is at the upper end of the Grand Canal, while the renowned Piazza St. Marcos (St. Mark's square) is near the lower end. Near the midpoint is the famed Rialto Bridge, spanning the Grand Canal.

Hotels are plentiful but our focus is on the area between Rialto and the Piazza in the San Marco and Castello districts. Hotels tend to be pricey but this is a tourist island, and there are hundreds of well rated hotels.
