Paris Geography

Paris Hotels: What are we looking for and where?

Paris geographically is divided in half by the Seine River, with the Left Bank (Eiffel Tower, Invalides, Latin Quarter Musee du Orsay) on your left as you look north/west in the direction the river flows and the Right Bank (Louvre, Arc de Triomphe) on your right. Two islands in the Seine- Ile de Cite and Ile St. Louis- are at the center of the historic city and the location of famous sites including Notre Dame, St. Chappelle and the Conciergerie. Paris divides itself into numbered wards called arrondissements (arr.'s for short). Numbering starts at the Ile de Cite and radiate out, roughly speaking, in a clockwise spiral.

We look for family hotels that are reasonably close to two or three key sites and conveniently located to a Metro stop. Generally, our focus is on the following arr.'s: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 16. The closer to the Seine the better in many instances for walking and access to sites. Optimal locations include:

- Near the Eiffel Tower, for obvious reasons. Hotels on the Rue Cler (east) side of the Tower also allow for walking to the Orsay or even the Louvre and Ile de Cite/Notre Dame.

-Across the Siene from the Eiffel Tower between it and the Arc de Triomphe, a more peaceful embassy district that allows convenient access to those site plus the Champs d'Elysees

- Latin Quarter (left bank near the two islands), close to the Seine, which allows good access to Notre Dame and the energy of the Left Bank.

-Louvre area (right bank), close to the Seine for easy mueseum and historical site visits

-Marais area, close to the Seine (this area is on the right bank near the two islands)

For family travel, we aim for safe, clean, mid-range hotels with local ownership.
